The 2009 West Virginia football team was led by head coach Bill Stewart and finished with a record of 9-4. They began the season ranked #8 in the nation but suffered a tough loss in their opener to #3 Alabama. They rebounded with wins over East Carolina and Auburn before losing a close game to Colorado.
The Mountaineers then won six straight games, including a thrilling overtime win over #22 Pittsburgh in the Backyard Brawl, before losing to #5 Cincinnati in their regular-season finale. They were invited to the Gator Bowl where they defeated Florida State 33-21.
Offensively, West Virginia was led by quarterback Jarrett Brown and running back Noel Devine. Brown threw for over 2,100 yards and 11 touchdowns while Devine rushed for over 1,400 yards and 13 touchdowns. The defense was anchored by standout linebacker J.T. Thomas who had 79 tackles, four sacks, and two forced fumbles.
Overall, the 2009 West Virginia football team had a successful season, finishing ranked #25 in the nation, and provided fans with some exciting moments along the way.
